Search Matter finds any matter in your company, including matters assigned to colleagues, completed matters and matters that are not on your worklist. The same page also lists the matters you opened most recently, so you can get back to them quickly.
Search for a matter
- Go to Matters > Search Matter.
- Type one or more words in Search Term.
- Leave Current Matters Only? ticked to search open matters, or clear it to include completed matters.
- Click Search or press Enter.
- Click a matter's title to open it.

Each result shows the matter name and reference, the client firm and the attorney. The heading tells you how many results were found.
What the search matches
Each word you type is matched against part of these details:
- the matter's system key (the number shown as System Key on the matter page);
- the matter name, reference and case number;
- the client attorney's name and email address;
- the client firm's name and account reference.
A matter is listed if it matches at least one of your words, so adding words widens the results rather than narrowing them. Plaintiff and defendant names are not searched. The search uses up to five words and returns up to 500 matters.
Only the first 30 characters of each detail are searched. For a long matter name, search on a word near the start of the name, or on the reference or case number.
Current Matters Only
With Current Matters Only? ticked, you only see matters that have no completion date. Clear the tick to see every matter, open and completed. If you click Search with an empty search term, you get all matters for that setting.
Recently viewed matters
When you open Search Matter, the Recently Viewed Matters panel lists up to 20 matters you opened from your worklist or from a search, newest first. The list is personal: colleagues see their own. Click a title to open the matter. The panel is hidden once you run a search; open Search Matter from the menu again to bring it back.

A matter drops off your list if a colleague opens it after you did.
To learn what you can do once a matter is open, see Working with matters. Matters assigned to you are also on your worklist.
